Why I Built Evidentia 3+ — And Why It’s Free If You Already Own Evidentia 3

The Honest Reason for Evidentia 3+

Evidentia 3 was built on a technology foundation that has since gone obsolete — no longer supported, no longer a platform I could build on. So I rebuilt it.

Evidentia 3+ is a complete rewrite on modern technology — the same methodology, the same evidence-based approach to genealogy research, rebuilt on a foundation that will carry it forward. It’s not a new product with a new price tag. If you already own Evidentia 3, Evidentia 3+ is yours. I wasn’t willing to tell users who trusted the software that they’d need to pay again to stay current while I modernized the codebase. That didn’t sit right with me.

What Changed in the Rebuild

Rebuilding from scratch gave me the opportunity to address things that weren’t possible to fix without starting over. Here’s what’s new:

A Modern Workspace

The evidence table is now built on a professional-grade grid that handles large datasets without slowing down. If you’ve ever worked with a project that had dozens of sources and felt the interface start to strain, that’s behind us now.

The Record Library

The Evidentia 3+ Record Library showing 49 research files organized in a grid view with cloud sync indicators

A dedicated space to catalog and manage your research records — separate from your subjects and claims.

Think of it as your research file cabinet sitting alongside your analysis workbench: organized, searchable, and connected to the work you’re doing. Browse by grid or tree view, filter by type, and validate file links — all without leaving the application.

Two New Tools That Work Together

Cloud storage preferences showing Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive options with sync settings

Cloud Storage — On Your Terms

Three cloud providers — Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive — with bidirectional sync and offline access. You can also switch providers without losing your work. Your research files should follow you, not constrain you.

Attachment Audit

File links drift out of sync as you move and reorganize your materials. The Attachment Audit tool scans your project, finds what’s broken or orphaned, and walks you through resolving it. Your evidence is only as reliable as the sources you can actually open.

Built-In Help

Guidance available right inside the application — so you don’t have to leave your workflow to find an answer.

What Hasn’t Changed

The core of what Evidentia does hasn’t moved. It helps you think rigorously about your sources, record your analysis honestly, and build conclusions that reflect what the evidence actually supports. Evidence gets assigned to multiple subjects. Conflicting sources get compared side by side. Conclusions get built from analysis, not assumption.

The methodology is the same. The tools around it are significantly better.

What Comes Next

Ed Thompson, founder of Evidentia Software

Evidentia 3+ is the bridge. When Evidentia 4 arrives, users who’ve made the move to 3+ won’t be forced to upgrade because of obsolete technology. That was the goal from the start.
